The Local Walking Guide shows the locations of six individual circular routes within Peterborough City boundaries and gives factual information about how to prepare for walking and its health benefits. As well as giving a little insight into the history of places of interest along each route and explaining what you might see, this guide also indicates the approximate distance, number of steps and calories used for each walk.
The Local Walking Guide is available in electronic and hard copy forms. The hard copies are located in the Travelchoice centre in the Queensgate Bus Station and the electronic version can be found here.
Beyond the margins of the city, the villages and rural landscapes surrounding Peterborough are waiting to be explored. Bus walks are becoming increasingly popular; they simply involve travelling to a rural area by bus then exploring the countryside by foot.
Starting the walk by bus is more sustainable and much more sociable than driving. It’s a good way to get to know other walkers and means you can also enjoy a drink in a nearby pub! The walks are a time for looking at the surrounding landscapes and soaking in the atmosphere.
Ramblers organises Bus Walks every Sundays in Peterborough, based on the Local Link service 401/404. There are currently around 15 to 20 walkers each week from a pool of around 40 ‘regulars’ and they pass through pretty villages around Peterborough and surrounding areas. The walks are typically about 4 or 5 miles in length and suitable for most abilities. The walk pace is varied, with regular stops for relaxing and recharging the batteries. The group is very open; anyone can just turn up at a bus stop and join with no need to book, and just the bus fare to pay.
