Schools Travel Plan Toolkit Launched

How pupils and staff travel to and from school is an issue that affects everyone – from pupils who want to take their new scooter to school to parents taking their children to different schools, or local residents who get caught in traffic near schools. Peterborough City Council (PCC) is committed to not only reducing the amount of congestion caused by school travel but to increasing the number of pupils and staff that travel by sustainable modes. This toolkit is intended to be a guide for schools and sets out:

• A range of travel planning measures that could be implemented at your schools to reduce car travel and encourage walking and cycling.
• Guidance on developing your own travel plan and undertaking travel surveys.
• Link to websites for further information on measures.
• Key contacts within PCC who can assist you.

Since their inception in August 2013, the success of Peterborough Parkruns has continued to grow. The attendance record was broken on January 25th by 30 people, with a total of 317 runners completing the course at Ferry Meadows!
Since the inaugural Parkrun last August 1,458 different runners, including participants from 115 athletics clubs, have covered a distance of 26,205km and 1,381 personal bests have been beaten! There have now been over 30 timed runs each Saturday including 2 extra on Christmas Day and New Years Day, Fancy Dress days and have also arranged ‘take over’ days where local clubs/organisations take over the running of the Parkrun for a day to raise aware of their club.
Since reaching the target of 1,500 unique runners being registered, Peterborough Parkrun is growing organically into a gathering each week with a fantastic sense of community and support for those new to runner or new to just getting active! Well done to all those involved – great work!
The Parkrun will continue every Saturday at 9am in Ferry Meadows Country Park – it’s completely FREE to take part in but you must register online before taking part. To join in, register to run or volunteer head to http://www.parkrun.org.uk/peterborough/ or if you just want to volunteer, contact the team via [email protected] to find out about the different roles available.

sporting satOn Saturday 18th January 2014, the Mayors Charity Committee hosted Peterborough’s first ever Sporting Saturday sports and leisure event for people with disabilities, their family members and carers.

Some of the taster sessions on offer throughout the day included: indoor cricket, rowing and archery along with organisations such as the Police giving free boxing lessons.
Finds raised from admission charges will go to the Mayor’s chosen charities – Inspire Peterborough, Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, the Wednesday PHAB Club and Parents United.

travelplanOver the next few months Sustrans will be working in the Ortons to help residents make informed choices about the way they travel.
Sustrans will be working in partnership with Travelchoice and Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), as well as other local groups. The aim of the project is to encourage people to think about cycling, walking and using public transport more often.
Later in the year, a canvasser from Sustrans will be knocking on doors in the Ortons and asking to have a brief chat about how people in the household travel. They will then offer a range of tailored travel information: maps, timetables and other leaflets, including the community designed Local Travel Map!
Included in the information offered will be a map of the Ortons produced exclusively for the project highlighting cycling and walking routes, bus routes, and other useful information.
